A historic
photograph. This one taken in front of the pavilion at the old Vigo Rd
Recreation ground. This ground was behind the aviary which is now situated
on the roundabout at the end of East St. We believe the photograph was
taken around 1906. However, closer examination would seem to reveal that
at least one current member can be found - have a look at the person front
right, sat crossed legged-Paul Funnell?!

Possibly the earliest photograph of an
Andover Team. Andover UTD taken in 1907

Andover Cricket Club outside
the old pavilion, which stood in the top corner of the ground. The
photograph was taken sometime in the late 1930s and recently presented to Club
Chairman, Brian Funnell. The appearance of this photograph in the Andover
advertiser has sparked off a wave of interest and we have been able to identify
the following details. The photograph seems to have been taken in 1935 and
was, almost certainly, a benefit match for Hampshire CCC Captain, Phil Mead
(seated six from the left, centre row). Other players identified
are: Back row: from the left, Bradley (groundsman), Page, Haskell*,
Harfield*, Len Creese*, ?, ?, ?, Jerry Hill*, Waygood,Legg. Middle row:
Mitchell*, ?, Reg Burdon, Johnny Arnold
(Hampshire & England double international soccer and cricket), Dr
Lawrie Farr (Dr Farr, it is thought, owned London Rd cricket ground at the
time. He was no cricketer but loved the game and played on these type of
occasions), Phil Mead*, Cecil, Neil McCorkell*, Sam Pothercary*, George Bull,
George Bull, Umpire Fred Shadwell (Fred would often perform as a
local stand up comedian, 'The Hampshire Yokel,' and was at the club dinner, see
menu below. His son, Geoff, still farms in Over Wallop) Front row - seated:
Len Richards (Len was manager of Lynn's iron mongers in the High St, Andover
until his death in the 1960s. His daughter, jean Small has a copy of this
photograph), ?, Harold Lillywhite, Steve Snow (a member of the Snow family
for so long connected to Longparish), Tony Russell, Taylor, Cave. That
just leaves four names still to be identified. Thanks due to: Dick and
Alan Snow, Greg from the history society, Geoff Shadwell, Mrs jean Small, and Mr
Dyer for the info.
All names marked * are Hampshire
players the rest Andover & District.

Andover & District vs
Hampshire C.C.C. Taken in around 1950/51. Back row: 3rd from the
right is a very young Mick White (Amport & for a few years, 1978/79,
Andover). 10th from the left, Arthur Wiltshire (Amport). Front row:
2nd left, Doug Stroud (Amport & Andover), 5th Left, Geoff Cruickshank
captain of Andover and Minor Counties player (Norfolk). If you are able
to identify anybody else in the photograph please contact info@andovercricketclub.co.uk
.
This is a copy of the Annual Dinner Menu from
1953. It was attended by various luminaries such as: Desmond Eagar, Alec
and Eric Bedser, E.W. Swanton and John Woodcock. Entertainment was
provided by, Fred Shadwell - The Hampshire Yokel (who appears in the photograph
taken in the 1930's, he is the umpire) and dancing was to the George
Clark Trio.

Andover at Portals some time in the 1960s,
possibly at a six-a-side competition. Sharp eyed visitors to the web site
will spot the current chairman sat front right. |

This Andover CC circa
1971. The photograph has come to us from Nev Thorley now resident of Brazil.
Thanks to Keith Williams we have a full team list.
Back Row: KW, Roly, Wally Hammond*, Dennis Heagren, Pete Lister, Alan Peacock,
Dave Manley. Front Row: Jock, Tony Hitchings, Alan Coleman, Brian Bosley. Keith wasn't
quite sure if 'Wally' Hammond was his real name or if that was just the
nickname he was given.
A cutting from the Andover Advertiser sent to us by Brian Bosley. Click on the
thumbnail and you can see the full size picture and read the caption. It seems
as if at least one future employee of Basil Fawlty was playing cricket. Thanks
very much to Brian for this.

are grateful to Steve Vear for this picture taken at a Colts presentation
Evening about in either 1993 or 4. Many of the group are still connected with the club
and there is one current county cricketer. Just how many can you name? |

Garth Paddock was one of Andover
Cricket Club's most loyal supporters. Although he never actually played for
Andover he was a regular at London Rd and enjoyed many happy afternoons
watching the games. When Garth died his family donated a bench to the club to
be placed on the ground. |
