Its Time To Get Fit Who wants an opportunity to get rid of
that holiday fat!? Haven't stuck to that new years resolution? ACC can help! New Year's Eve Party
Well done to Ali Hooper and everyone who helped a very big thanks. To see the full size picture click on the thumbnail. AGM Decisions The AGM turned out to be a well attended and generally up beat affair. The mood is definitely one of wanting to go forward after the furore of the relegation issue. In his report to the Club, Roger Miller (1st XI) skipper said that he felt playing in the Silver Division may even turn out to be a blessing as we try to bring on our younger players in a slightly less hostile environment. The main changes from the evening came in the shape of a change of Treasurer with Phil Knight stepping down after twelve years in the job and being replaced by Becky Brown, who adds this role to her existing role of Welfare Officer. Phil has been a wonderful Treasurer during some of the most difficult times, financially, the club has faced and we are grateful for his efforts. Jon Walsh has taken over the job of Bar Manager and Tim Brown has become Press Officer. With Ken Brown continuing as groundsman, with the full endorsement of the Club, it means that the power base now is with the residents of Croft Avenue. Ali Hooper has taken over the Fixture Secretary job. On the playing side Tim Brown become Sunday 1st XI skipper and Andy Hooper was confirmed as 2nd XI skipper a role he assumed mid-way through 2005 when Ian Gardner began to play in the 1st XI. Do the Figures Lie? The Southern League AGM has been and gone and still we haven't been allowed a hearing in the accreditation row that has left us relegated to the Silver Division. So I've done a little bit of digging around the SPL web site. Cricket is a game of figures and statistics so let's have a look at the stats from last season. I've worked out my own league tables based on the following categories: a) average runs scored at each ground per game, b) average wickets to fall per game, c) average runs per wicket. Then I've worked out a final league table depending upon the total placings in the sub-categories, ie Sth Wilts are 1st in two categories and 6th in the third so they score 8 points. I know it makes Duckworth-Lewis seem straightforward and really I ought to get out more but it all makes very interesting reading and filled the time quite nicely whilst 'Simply Come Dancing' was on the telly. So, if you're not losing the will to live, read on further.
Still with me? Then two things must be borne in mind a) I only have CSE grade 4 Maths and b) this was all worked out using my daughter's calculator which is shaped like a heart. However, the odd error not withstanding, if you look at the figures, London Rd doesn't stand out as the worst performing pitch in the league. Certainly not noticeably worse that you could be relegated for it without being given a chance to state your case and yet that is what has happened. Dare I suggest that there has been an air of subjectivity in some of the marking by visiting captains? Have we been the victim of tactical marking? Perhaps we should now look at who gains from all this. Ventnor, Champions of the Silver Division, are not allowed to be promoted; Hursley Park will remain where they are. However, conveniently, Alton, who were second in the Silver Div., have had their accreditation upgraded and so will be promoted. By an odd coincidence Alton are the club that league Chairman Paddy Heffernan belongs to. OK, so now what do you all think of the situation? Why not use our own forum to post a comment? Click here to access the Andover CC forum. http://forums.fatboylan.net/viewforum.php?f=4 Southern Echo Inaccuracies The report in the Southern Echo regarding the SPL contains several inaccuracies concerning our dealing with the SPL at the AGM. The report says, "The expected vote of no confidence in the league failed to materialise...." It was never the intention to propose such a vote. We wouldn't be able to do such a thing at an the AGM this would have required an Extraordinary General Meeting. Earlier in the report it says, "..it was rumoured that Andover would call for the resignation of the management committee..." Is that what we are dealing with; hearsay and conjecture? The report then says, "Three members of the Andover club - president Andy Hooper, chairman Brian Funnell and Tim Keighley - attended the annual meeting at the Rose Bowl but didn't say a word on the `no confidence in the SPL management committee' issue.," There wasn't a 'no confidence issue' to speak on only the issue of the report from the league which included our relegation and this went through on the nod so quickly our representatives never had the chance to speak. Tim Keighley wasn't even there. When challenged about this the league press officer said that there was someone sitting next to Andy Hooper who looked like Tim Keighley. Whilst one's sympathies go out to this unfortunate individual who must suffer terribly from people rushing up to him and saying, "Aren't you Tim Keighley?" as he walks the streets of Hampshire, the error hardly gives you much faith in the standard of accuracy of reporting the activities of the league. It should be noted that during the meeting the management committee put forward six proposals only two of which were accepted. They lost the vote regarding the banning of overseas players and the one to change the way league positions are calculated using an average points system. Now read on. Devastating News There can't be many people by now who haven't heard the devastating news that the league have chosen to demote the 1st XI despite us not finishing last due the continuing poor marks awarded the London Rd wicket. This has been known for some weeks however, we haven't been able to put it on the web site until now due to the extreme sensitivity of the league regarding any perceived criticism of them and their actions which was likely to land us with a hefty fine. Needless to say we feel very badly done by especially in the light of one visiting skipper who admitted in a letter to us that his marking had been hasty and had been influenced by the history of our pitch rather than the actual performance of it on the day in a match won by the visiting side by ten wickets, which suggests that the home batting was suspect that day rather than the pitch. It does seem strange that an organisation such as the SPCL should be so sensitive and averse to any form of adverse comment regarding their actions. During the summer there were 3009 runs scored in 1st XI home games for the loss of 138 wickets. A similar look at another club who were also struggling through the year shows that in their home games 3088 runs were scored for the loss of 125 wickets. Not a big difference really, certainly not one that you would think would justify the relegation of one club who didn't finish bottom of the league and the saving of another who did. Its not as if we could be guilty of negligence in the case of our pitch. We have had three strips replaced at considerable cost with work being supervised by ECB representatives and a further three replaced this autumn. Hey ho! Great News There will be many member who knew that June Funnell was about to undergo surgery to remove a cataract from her eye last week. We are absolutely delighted that the operation was a complete success and June now has full vision again in the affected eye. All the club is delighted for her. A bouquet of flowers was sent to her on behalf of all the members and if you click here you will be able to read her thank you note. "CRICKET BITS" TO BACK NEW WEEKLY PREMIER LEAGUE AWARD... The Southern Electric Premier League has announced a new weekly “champagne moment” award to recognize top individual or match winning performances each throughout its three divisions. The awards are to be made in conjunction with www.cricketbits.co.uk , a subsidiary of Cricket-Hockey.com, the Salisbury-based cricket and hockey equipment specialists, who host the Premier League’s popular website. The weekly prize will compliment the existing Southern Electric awards normally presented to either the leading run maker or wicket taker of the three Premier Divisions at the end of each calendar month. “The plan is to recognize ‘magic moment’ performances, such as young Roy Cockram’s brilliant 88 for the Academy on the opening day of the season, when his side were in the mire at 86-6 and went on to win the match,” explained SPL chairman Paddy Heffernan. “The following week we had Mark Coppleston’s dramatic match-winning performance for Cockram, Coppleston and Loader have been announced as winners of the new Premier League award for the first three weeks of the season. The weekly awards will continue until the end of the season.
