Bonfire Night Festivities

Over 75 people attended the fireworks evening on Saturday night and were treated to a fantastic display by Steve Graham. A big thank you goes to Ali, Steve, Andy Hooper, Mary and Geoff Dunn, Nick Coates and anyone else who helped out. Ali will be making further use of his event management with a New Year's Eve 'do' (date to be announced). There will be the usual fun and games with fireworks. It will start at 7.30pm and will cost the princely sum of £5. Ali would like the money up front if possible so that they can make sure they know how many to cater for. However, tickets may also be purchased on the night so lang as you let Ali know you are coming. You can contact Aili on alihooper@hotmail.co.uk .

Work Begins on the Square

Just in case there is any doubt this year about whether we have any work done to our square here is the evidence. Work began on Thursday 21st September an replacing three more strips. The soil being used is  Surrey Loam approx 60 tons with a clay content of approx 27 to 30 %. Thanks to Ken Brown for the pictures.

The 4th XI senior pros enjoyed their annual dinner at The Vine in Stockbridge on Saturday night. Kevin Hakes had an eventful drive to the pub and we hope he has fully recovered

The 3rds before taking the field against Hamble 15th July.

The 4th XI vs Sth Wilts26/8/06. JB's last match in charge after twenty seasons as a Saturday skipper.

The 1st XI before their game with Ventnor on 3rd June 2006. The 2nds before their game against Bashley 15th July. Have we found the reason for the 2nds disappointing season? Only 10 players.

Season Ends With Seven

The season ended with a nine-a-side game at Basingstoke. The Andover team including two guest players. In the end Andover lost by 40 runs. Jon Walsh making 70!

Coppy's Big One

Mark Copleston made the highest score of his career on Sunday when he hit 150 against Tichborne Park. Andover made 270 from just 40 overs.

Now that the main part of the season is complete web site up dates will be as news happens.

The Great Escape is Complete

26th August: The seconds completed their great escape by beating Calmore on Saturday. Set to score 160 odd it was a very nervous batting display but they got there in the end losing seven wickets. This does represent a great effort from the 2nds who many had written off only weeks ago. The 1st XI beat St Cross and now look to end the season at best as runners-up, which represents a great effort from them. They complete their league season next week against Hungerford, who couldn't even raise a side for their league game last Saturday - yet they managed to field a team in a 2nd XI fixture!!. The 4th XI inflicted defeat on Sth Wilts IV and ending JB's twenty years as a Saturday skipper in some style. 5ths had an interesting game. They were bowled out for 69 by table topping Amesbury who were then reduced to 27-7 only for their overseas star to see them home. Sadly the 3rds ended a disappointing year by losing to ten-man Sth Wilts III. They had Sth Wilts on the wrack at 60-7 in reply to a total of 160+ until Hugh Tomlinson, playing only his first game of the season hit 50.

Southern League Promotion Conundrum

There could be an interesting situation arising at the end of the season regarding promotion from the Silver league. If Ventnor win they can't be promoted, at the moment, due to the problem with their ground. There is no doubt they deserve to be promoted; they have slogged their way all through the divisions of the pyramid but the league will have to change their rules to allow them promotion. Second place St Cross, apparently, don't want to be promoted. Our 1st XI aren't exactly falling over themselves with joy at the prospect of promotion, Rowledge's ground won't meet accreditation, Havant II XI can't be promoted. All of which means 6th placed Trojans getting the promotion place. Hmmmmm; I think they only have 'Silver' accreditation which leaves Lymington.

1st XI Win at Lymington

20th August: There was a good win for the 1st XI at Lymington. Andover made 210-8, Nick Palmer making 43. Then bowled Lymington out for 175; Ritchie Taylor taking four wickets. The 2nd,3rd,4th & 5th XI games were all off.

Rain Ruins Rest of Cricket Week

The last three games of cricket week were all rained off.

12th Man & Teams Available

League tables Up to Date

The league tables are up to date after games on 12th August. Mathematicians amongst you will be able to work out that it looks as though the 3rds can't avoid relegation now. The 2nd Twenty/20 match (it wasn't really twenty/20 more fifteen/15) of cricket week looked to be an interesting affair. Hampton scored 74 from the first 4, eight ball, overs. They finally ended on 168. Admittedly you got 4 for a wide and consequently if the wide went for a boundary then that counted as 8! In reply the boys knocked the runs off for the loss of just a few wickets.

Cricket Week Begins

15th August: The first match of cricket week took place in exceptional spirit. The Under 30s hit a massive 198-8 from their 20 overs. Luke Graham making 70 odd. The highlight of the innings was a stunning catch at deep long on by Dave Hewitt to get rid of Tim Clarke. The Over 30s then had the misfortune to lose their three big guns - Summers, 'Funbags' and 'Sailor' before the end of the 3rd over. 'Seal' who was making a return visit to London Rd then put his back out to effectively make the score 23-4. The Rocking Rev and John Cop staged a comeback of sorts until Tim Clarke returned the favour and caught Dave one handed. As the innings closed JB was batting with a torch and 'Beaker' was bowling leg breaks Walshy was whacking it all over the place. At the end of the game there was a presentation to Dave Hewitt from the club to mark his last game at Andover; he will play the final 5th XI league game. He leaves us to go to tend to a new flock in Exeter in October.

On a personal note I can really say that tonight was one of the best nights cricket I have ever enjoyed at Andover. Great good humour and spirit throughout. Just always remember - we are Andover Cricket Club and we roam around from to pub.

Dust Bowl

Apparently there was some comment at TVBC over the remarks made recently concerning the state of London Rd No2. Well here is the evidence. The first cloud of dust in the picture is the pitch mark the second is around the batsman's feet. When Fran Andrews, a bowler who bowls at such a pace that if he doesn't like the delivery he can run after it to get it back, makes the ball rear up over a batter's head then all is not well.

Good Win for 1st XI and 2nds Continue the Great Escape.

12th August: The 1st XI enjoyed a good win over Trojans today. Batting forst Andover made 230 odd and won easily. The seconds continue their great escape with a win. Four wickets for Jonty Hadfield and three for Andy Hoops. 3rds & 5ths were all beaten. It now seems as if the 3rds are to be relegated. No news yet of the 5th XI.

Teams & 12th Man

11th August: Team sheets and the 12th Man for this week end are now available. For all the players there will be an extra insert in this week's 12th Man from Brian Funnell. It is regarding our financial position and you are all urged to read it. It will not be available online.

League tables Up To date

8th August: Normal service will now be resumed after a couple of week ends away. All league tables are up to date. Congratulations to the 2nds for their two wins. Still every hope of avoiding the drop. The 1st XI have lost a bit of momentum let's hope they get back on track this week end. 3rds are still struggling and look destined for Div III next year. 4ths had one win and one defeat but they have a very healthy average and should be safe. 5ths had a notable win over Upper Clatford - always good to beat local opposition.

2nds Win the Only game of the Weekend

24th July: The Sunday 2nds won the only game to be played this weekend against Thatcham in the Border League. Put into bat on a wicket that had suffered through water leaking under the covers during yesterday's storm and therefore was bone dry at one end and very wet at the other Andover were 61-4 when Luke Andrews joined JB. They then put together a stand of 119 before Luke was out for 70. JB ended up 58 not out. The Thatcham reply got off to a flying start with 15 runs coming from the first over. However wicket began to fall at regular intervals and in the end Thatcham were bowled out for 126. Mention must be made of their little 12 year old who batted at No4 and scored 20 odd. he showed great courage and will go on to score loads of runs in his life.

God Works for TVBC

23rd July: God not only works for Test valley Borough Council but He must also log onto this web page. The result of us moaning about the lack of water on the London Rd No2 square he sends enough water that must have had Mr Noah practising his sea shanties and the animals in the area looking around for a decent partner. Now a small message to the Almighty. We need the water on Thursday - preferably at night - not on the day of the game, but thanks anyway. There was no cricket to report.

1st XI Go Back to the Top

The Return of the Dust Bowl.

15th July: Just when you thought it had all be a horrible dream the London Rd No2 dustbowl is back with a vengeance. The 3rds crashed to 40 odd for 6 at one point today. At least 4 of those to fall came about because of the state of the pitch. Paul Collins (who appears not to have moved from his stance) was out to a shooter. They recovered to 132 all out thanks to some good batting from Simon Reeves who made 50. Hamble finally winning by 4 wickets. Here's a little message to the good people who prepare the pitches on No2. A week last Friday it had rained for much of the day. The result? A belter; 480 runs scored in the day. Therefore all the pitch needs is WATER. Lots of it. Not just turning the sprinkler on at 2pm for a couple of hours when it is so hot the moisture evaporates before it hits the ground. It needs turning on at 7pm and leaving for the night on Thursday. Elsewhere there was a good win for the 1st XI against Romsey, as a result of which they go back to the top of the League, but sadly everybody else lost. 2nds chasing 172 lost by 12. Similar story for the 4ths on the all-weather at Wilton and the 5ths made 180 but lost by a few wickets. To read the league tables click here.

Collingbourne President's Match

JB and Mark Cop. played for the President's XI at Collingbourne on Sunday. Coppy made 50, JB didn't.

4ths Win In Dramatic Style Other Teams Lose

8thJuly: A wonderful hundred on debut for Andover from Tom Darby was the cornerstone of the 4th XI's win over local rivals Hurstbourne Priors. Asked to score 242 to win Tom Darby hit 116 in quick time to set the 4ths on the way to victory. However, it wasn't all plain sailing as they still needed one run from the last ball. The delivery went through to the 'keeper who aimed to throw the stumps down as Russell Andrews and Kevin Hakes scampered a bye. The ball missed the stumps and Andover had won a dramatic game. The 1st XI lost to Havant II. 'Dodge' making 76 and taking wickets; when he scores runs and takes wickets the 1st XI lose! The 2nds went down in dramatic style at BAT. Having made 190 BAT II, who included Dan Goldstraw in their side, scored the runs in only 21 overs. The 3rds made 142 away at Ots & Romsey. JB top scored with 57. They then came across Charlie Forward in frightening form and the game was all over in fairly quick time. The 5ths also had to chase a big score and fell away at the end to lose by just a handful of runs.

1st XI go Top of the League

1st July: A wonderful performance from the 1st XI saw them hit 347 off Hungerford and go to the top of the league. To see a league table click HERE. Cillie Vandermerwe made 150 and there was a ton from Mark Miller. In reply Hungerford were never in it and Chris Hadfield really put the icing on the cake with a hat trick. The 2nds went down at home to Sparsholt and so did the 3rds against Burrdge II. 4th XI lost away at Whiteparish.

2nd July: Swindon won at London Rd in the 1st XI Border league encounter. But there was revenge for the 2nds who won away by just 10 runs. Hero of the hour was Will Ingram who claimed 5 wickets with a devastating second spell.

The 2nd XI batting at Swindon

'Big F'

1st July: Should you bump into our redoubtable 5th XI skipper, Phil Knight, during the course of the week end be very careful of what you say. 'Big F' must have made something in the region of a million 'phone calls during the week to ensure that not only could we put out a 5th XI on this day of all days but he also found players for 4th & 3rd XIs. His reward was a call from Michelmersh & Timsbury at 11pm on Friday night to announce they couldn't raise a side so the 5ths have no game after all. It will be interesting to see just how many games are called off this week end.

1st XI Topple Saint X

24th June: The 1st XI beat table topping St Cross at London Rd. St Cross included Hampshire's Jimmy Adams in their line up only made 169 in their fifty overs. In reply Mark Miller made 92 to steer Andover home by 7 wickets. The 2nds, 3rds and 4ths all lost. The 4ths in dramatic fashion with Sparsholt hitting 20 runs from the final over to give them victory by 1 wicket. The 5th XI won at Broughton.

1st XI Win, 2nds Thumped, 3rds Win, 4ths Fade at the Last Gasp, 5ths Record Big Win

18th June: The 1st XI went to a good win over Lymington at London Rd. Andover made 250; Boots hit 70 and there were good contributions all round from the rest. Lymington got off to good start but lost wickets quickly at the end. The 2nds went to table topping Tichborne Park and were thumped. Bowled out for 151 Tichborne raced to 75 from their first 7 overs. Then had no difficulty making the winning runs. Tim Brown hit 60 for the 3rds in their 6 wicket win. $ths lost by just 9 runs. Chasing 242 against Idlers they put up a great fight. Simon Reeves, Andy Holman and Omair all making good runs. Then there was a flurry from Chris Hooper but in the end it was just too many. The 5th XI hit 258 against Redlynch & Hale III. Tom Lucker making a guest appearance this year hit 60 and Jos Clarke 57. Redlynch didn't make any effort to make the runs and ended 160 odd.

4th XI Win at Leckford Others Beaten

10th June: The 1st XI lost a game that they probably think they should have won against Trojans. Ritchie Taylor claimed 6 wickets as Trojans were restricted to 160ish. In Reply Andover bowled out for 120ish. 2nds lost by 20odd runs against Burridge. Chasing 206 they got off to a reasonable start but lost wickets in little clutches and ended 20 odd runs short. 3rds lost to Ryde. Andover made 189 with Nick Dancer hitting 87. Ryde lost 5 wickets getting to the total. 4th XI beat Leckford 2s easily. JB made 88 not out. Fran Andrews then claimed 5 wickets and there were three stumpings for Dickie Channon as Leckford were bowled out well short of the required total. 5th XI lost - no details as yet.

Southern Electric Cup Win

6th June: *Report from Ali Hoops) "We beat Fair Oak in the second round of the southern electric midweek cup tonight. We batted first got 153 (coppy got 50, me 31, others chipped in) then bowled them out for 100. Matt got 3,
Tim Saye 2, Luke 2, 2 run-outs and Boots got 1."

Ritchie Taylor leaving the field after claiming a hat trick against Falkland at London Rd on Sunday.

Sunday 2nd XI before their game at Falklands

Jonty Hadfield after his match winning knock of 50 not out. Following on from taking 5 wickets.

4th June: The Sunday teams enjoyed some good fortune against Falklands both home and away. The 1st XI were robbed of an almost certain victory by the rain. However, there was time for Ritchie Taylor to claim a hat trick as the visitors seemed on course for defeat the heavens opened and the game was abandoned. Earlier Coppy (jnr) had hit 116 - a great knock. The 2nds managed to get their victory completed before the rains came. Jonty Hadfield turned in an excellent all-round performance with five wickets and a not out fifty to see his team home for the loss of just one wicket.

Four Losses and a Win

3rd June: Only the 1st XI managed to win today. They bowled out Ventnor for 173 and then won although it was far from comfortable. The 2nds were chasing 160 to win and went from 103-2 to lose the game by thirty runs. 3rds hit 200+ at Langley manor and lost by 7 wickets. 4ths recovered from 25-5 to make 140 but lost by 6 wickets to Sutton Scotney. 5ths lost; no details as yet. The thumbnails show various action shots from 3rd June; 1st XI and 4th XI. To see the full size picture click on the thumbnail

Congratulations to club stalwart Carol Roberts who celebrated her birthday today. Best wishes from all the club.

Sixes Abandoned

29th: The 6-a-side competition had to be called off before the end after several restarts due to the showers. After the end had been declared we were visited by Sir George Young MP who joined us in the bar. Sir George, apart from being our local MP, is one of our Vice-presidents and it was great to see him there. The teams for the week end have been selected and as your hardworking webmiester is off on a cricket tour this week they are being published on the web site today instead of waiting for the usual shenanigans to have died down usually by about Friday night

Yet More Rain

27th May: 2.45pm, 2nds,3rds & 4ths all off. 1st XI & 5th XI all started and then stopped as the rain moved in.

Rain

21st May: It rained all day - 'nuff said.

5th XI Win in Local Derby

20th May: Only the 5th XI managed to play today away at Longparish against their 2nd XI and they came away with a win. Jeremy Blackburn was caught on the boundary for a magnificent 99. Made out of a total of 186 Jeremy never looked in any kind of trouble except when he was falling over or colliding with bowlers. In reply Longparish were kept to 160 odd. JB was brought in at the last minute and he took three wickets and ran the Longparish skipper out with a direct hit. I'll type that out again slowly so that the true significance of the event can be digested. The Longparish skipper was run out by JB who had bowled the ball which was hit toward mid off he then threw the wicket down with the batter out of his ground at the striker's end. Got that? How on earth this individual is going to look his team mates, wife, children friends in the face again is a mystery.

A Dry Game in a Wet Land

20th May, 11.00am: So far 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th XIs all off as a result of torrential rain yesterday.

Hampshire League Tables Now Available

18th May: Well done the Hampshire League for stealing a march on their SPL counterparts and being the first to publish up to date league tables. To read them click on 'League Tables' above.

14th May: 1st XI game called off as Challow and Childrey were in the 2nd round of the cup and didn't tell anyone. 2nds lost at Purley. Jack Andrews in the runs with 68 out of 183 all out. Purley winning by 3 wickets.

13th May: Two wins and three defeats. 1st XI went to a convincing win against OTs & Romsey by 7 wickets. Dodge leading the way with a hat trick and 53 runs. Nick Palmer making 34 not out on his return to Andover. 2nds, 3rds & 5ths lost. 4th XI beat last season's relegated team Michelmersh & TImsbury. Luke Grahan, playing as a batter, making 93.

Return of the Prodigal

12th May: Nick Palmer, who left us in 1999 is returning and will play for the 1st XI on Saturday. We are absolutely delighted with this news and are sure that everyone in the club will make Nick very welcome on his return.

Four Defeats

7th May: Aldershot cancelled the game this morning. So both 1st & 2nd XI games are now off due to opposition not being able to get teams.

6th: Only four teams made it onto the field on Saturday and sadly there were four defeats. 1st XI lost in controversial circumstances at Havant (why is it always Havant). Needing two to win off the last ball they couldn't manage a run yet Havant only had three fielders and not the required four in the circle, which should have resulted in a no-ball. Unfortunately this wasn't spotted by the umpires and Andover lost. There were five wickets for Tim Saye and a fifty for Cillie Vandermerwe.  There were late starts at London Rd but the 2nds and 3rds both lost heavily. 2nds went for 243-3. They had to field in constant drizzle with a ball like a bar of soap. In reply they could only make 148. 3rds lost at home to Whitchurch. Andover made 166, Andy sale top scoring with 70. Whitchurch lost only three wickets. The 4ths went down away at Longford Park. Set 152 to win they made a brave effort but lost by just 10. Dickie Channon (31), John Copleston (46) and Adam Baxter, playing his first game of cricket since 1999, (30*) were the run getters. Earlier there was a 'fivefor' from JB, two wickets for Russell Andrews (playing his first game for two years) and Matt Neale and one for Fran Andrews.

Emrys Williams

5th May: It will come as a great shock to many to know that Emrys Williams, who played for us and then later Amport, died last week. It seems that he had a heart attack whilst at the wheel of his car driving through Swansea. Emrys taught PE at Winton School for many years had only retired three years ago. Naturally we extend our sympathies to his family. If anyone wants an address to send a card of condolence contact info@andovercricketclub.co.uk and we'll provide it.

You Win a Few You Lose a Few

30th April: The first games to fall victim of the 'can't get a team' syndrome. Monday's game against Basingstoke has gone as did the 2nd XI game away at St Cross. 3rds lost on Saturday - not even the demon bowling of Tim Keighley could save them! 1st XI won (I think). Sunday saw the 1st XI lose at home to Gosport in the cup and the 2nds win away against Newton Tony.

First Games Bring Three Wins

23rd April: The Sunday teams made it a clean sweep for the week end with an unlikely win at Warminster. Andover scored only 96 and Warminster were seemingly cruising at 83-3 but then suffered the mother of all collapses and fell to 87 all out.

22nd April: The first games brought two wins. At home the 1st XI went to a good win against Alton. Set to score 149 they were struggling until Mark Copleston (70*) and Luke Graham (40*) steered them home. Both lads showing that the early season practice on rock hard West Indian wickets was just the preparation needed for a slow early season London Rd track. The seconds away at Steeple Langford had a comfortable win. Andover made 200+ and bowled the home side out for 50odd.

First Games This Saturday

The first games are this Saturday. One home game and one on Sunday - 2006 begins here.

Second Bulletin From Our Brave Boys Battling for the Honour of Andover C.C.

11 April 06: Three one to Barbados; a victory at last could have been two!! Sheffield's ground consisted of 2 tracks in the middle of a shanty town with numerous rum shacks surrounding the playing area. Batting first the home side again raced away reaching 259 from their allotted overs. Walshy took 3 wickets and the rest were shared around. Walshy has a very stiff neck have watched many of his balls sail miles into the shanty town. We did well in response and eventually fell only 12 runs should have it. Roger Miller notched a classy 60 odd and Mark Butcher has fined heavily for jug avoidance falling 3 short his half century. 16 needed from 2 overs, 3 wickets left ? we were favourites. Other contributions came from Andy Holman 28 and Luke Andrews batted really well for his 32 not out. The heat, (remember playing cricket in 30 degree is not fun!!), and the Banks beer took their toil as we could not manage the required runs. Hospitality of the home sides has been excellent, at all the matches we have been fed and watered well always with a post match meal
and banks in abundance.

From Sheffield on Saturday a trip to Harrison's caves was a great experience on Sunday. The rest was spent relaxing around the pool with a sing song in the evening at a local hostelry. We celebrated Martin Roberts' 18th birthday with a chocolate cake organized by Lesley and he did suffer later in the evening not though too much chocolate cake.

The match against Tornados bought our first victory through a great team performance. Fielding first Mikey Adams did the damage taking 4 for 38 as Andover shot the Tornados for 206. Luke graham took 3 for 47 and Roger Miller
3 for 26. Mark Miller led the assault with another excellent 60, Timmy Brown scored a solid 21 while Mark Butcher steered the side home with another finable innings of 36 not out; as you can imagine celebrations followed as we drunk
the hotel dry of Banks.

Another relaxing day Tuesday, some golf swimming and sunbathing in 30 degree heat; a very tough life. Wednesday the whole tour party is going on the island bus trip departing at 9.00am returning at 5.30, we will be knackered after that trip hope more beer has been ordered.

The final report will follow after the Thursday match, in the meantime keep thinking of us all suffering in the heat and all in the name of Andover Cricket Club.
Take care love
TK

Strange But True

A Sunday morning net session was interrupted by a policeman who came to report that someone had managed to get themselves locked in the pavilion at London Rd and couldn't get out. It took the fire brigade to release this individual by removing a window.

(This isn't an April Fool)

Happy Birthday Liz

The whole club gathered at the Lansdale Institute in Enham to celebrate the birthday of Andover Cricket Club's favourite lady. Liz Hall was 80 on 13th March. There was a gathering of colts young and old to greet her as she walked into the hall to a battery of flashlights. During the celebration she was presented with a piece of glass ware which depicted the ground at London Rd. A truly memorable evening for such a remarkable person.
