Burridge v Andover Cricket Club 1st XI (Sat) on Sat 01 May 2010 at 1:00pm
Andover Cricket Club Won by 48 runs

Match report Andover started their Silver league campaign with a convincing win over last season’s high flyers Burridge. On a wet and windy day, Andover skipper Richard Taylor won the toss and elected to bat first in a match that would inevitably be rain affected. The captain’s faith was rewarded as Ali Hooper and Chris Hadfield, one of three Hadfields playing for the town side, got the side off to a decent start considering the conditions. Hooper bludgeoned 27 before being caught going for another big hit, which prompted Hadfield to drop anchor while Andover’s batsmen struggled with the steep bounce and sideways movement. Will Prozesky, Mark Copleston and James O’Gorman all fell victims to the bounce and Andover found themselves in the mire at 60-4.

However, after a lengthy break for rain, Jonty Hadfield steadied the ship with his older brother and steered the side towards a competitive total. Both played with patience and style as they milked the opposition spinners, demonstrating innovative shots and excellent running between the wickets, something they have undoubtedly been honing in the back garden. Chris Hadfield was unfortunate to pick out the man in the deep off a full toss and was dismissed for a well crafted 29.

Martin Roberts (14) was next to the crease and he showed maturity supporting the rampant Jonty Hadfield. Roberts was unlucky to play on to his own stumps attempting a sweep shot. It was then left to the youngest of the Hadfield brothers, Robbie (18), to play the supporting role to his older brother. The prodigious 15 year old, making his first XI debut, showed what a talent he is by working the ball into the gaps and running well between the wickets before chipping one up to mid-wicket. Jonty Hadfield was eventually dismissed for superb 52 and set the innings up for a big finale but the Andover tail refused to wag as the final 3 wickets fell for a mere 10 runs. The Andover innings ended on 180 all out from 42 overs, which was reduced due to the rain break, leaving Burridge requiring 159 off 36 overs to win the game.

Andover’s bowling and fielding was exceptional all through the innings and they made it very difficult for Burridge. Openers Luke Graham and James O’Gorman restricted the Burridge batsmen with their impeccable line and length and O’Gorman made the first inroads with two wickets in two overs.

Will Prozesky came on to bowl a tidy spell and the required run rate continued to increase as the overs ticked by. Richard Taylor then brought himself on to bowl in tandem with Mike Adams, the death bowling specialist, and this effectively ended the game as Adams ripped through the middle order with 3 wickets. Taylor was impossible to get away and his probing length earned him one wicket with a miserly economy rate of just 2 runs per over.

The Burridge innings petered out and they ended up 48 runs short of the reduced target with 7 wickets down. An excellent start to the season for the town side who showed they have the potential to be title contenders. Andover look to continue with their winning ways when they host local rivals Hursley Park tomorrow.
