Hartley Wintney v Andover Cricket Club 1st XI (Sat) on Sat 15 May 2010 at 1:00pm
Andover Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets

Match report Andover ended their unbeaten run when they travelled to Hartley Wintney in an amazing game of cricket. The village ground is unique insofar as it has a 40 yard boundary on one side of the ground and this made for an exciting game. Andover Captain Richard Taylor won the toss for the third consecutive game and decided to bat on what looked like a hard and fast pitch. However, early on there was some inconsistent bounce which made it difficult to get the ball away at times.
Openers Ali Hooper and Chris Hadfield got the town side off to the best possible start, amassing 100 in the first 15 overs with Hooper doing the bulk of the damage. Well supported by Hadfield (32), Hooper demolished the Hartley opening bowlers, notching his fifty up in a mere 34 balls and was unlucky to be bowled on 56. The innings was set up perfectly for Will Prozesky but unfortunately the Hartley bowlers tightened the screws, giving him nothing to hit and he eventually got frustrated and was caught on the boundary going for a big shot. When Hadfield soon followed Prozesky, the Andover innings needed rescuing and this came in the form of kiwi James O’Gorman and home-grown Mark Copleston. The pair batted with class and maturity as they hit the bad ball for four and nudged the good balls for singles. Copleston was the first of the pair to bring up his fifty but was soon followed by O’Gorman. After a breakdown in communication, Mark Copleston (51) was run-out and O’Gorman (56) was then caught on the boundary trying to force the pace. The innings was set-up for Jonty Hadfield (29) and Richard Taylor (45) to hit out at the end. The pair smashed 80 runs in the final 8 overs to give Andover their highest total of the season so far 301-5 off 50 overs.
Andover were confident of defending the huge total and set about their task well, restricting the opposition to 4 or 5 runs an over and taking the early wicket of Phillips thanks to a inswinging Yorker from Taylor. However, Andover found the fielding hard going and as the pitch flattened out wickets became elusive. The Hartley batsmen started to kick into gear and smashed the ball to all parts of the ground. When O’Gorman trapped danger-man Evans LBW and Taylor picked up his second wicket, Andover thought they were in with a chance but this brought kiwi Scott Baldwin to the crease and he set about reaching the target in quick time.
Hartley required 100 runs in the final 10 overs but with the tiny boundary on one side, this task was not insurmountable. The overseas star heaved his way to fifty in no time and took the game within Hartley’s reach and then in the 47th over, he hit the first 4 balls for 20 runs and sealed the game for the home team.
Andover should not be too disheartened with their performance; they managed to score over 300 runs with the top six showing good form but the home team knew their ground well and used it to their advantage. Next week Andover travel to last season’s champions Rowledge for their toughest test yet.
