Rowledge v Andover Cricket Club 1st XI (Sat) on Sat 22 May 2010 at 1:00pm
Andover Cricket Club Won by 123 runs

Match report Andover 1st XI returned to winning ways in a record-breaking win over last season’s champions Rowledge. On a scorching hot day, Andover captain Richard Taylor won the toss and unsurprisingly elected to bat first. Opener Ali Hooper set the scene by straight-driving Adam Sharp’s first ball of the match out of the ground. Hooper blazed his way to 54 off a mere 25 balls, hitting three 6s and six fours, with one Sharp over costing 29 runs.

The normally attacking Will Prozesky was made to wait in the background as Hooper unleashed a blistering assault on the Rowledge new-ball attack. However, when Hooper was bowled, it was Prozesky’s turn to pepper the compact boundary, smashing nine sixes and 21 fours in a blistering 177 off 92 balls, his tenth SPL century. The innings is the highest individual Southern Premier League score by an Andover batsmen and one that oozed pure class. Prozesky shared a 215-run second-wicket stand with James O’Gorman (92) who played an excellent supporting role, rotating the strike and hitting the bad ball for four when it came along.

When Prozesky was finally bowled, it only paved the way for the in-form Mark Copleston who continued the onslaught and crashed the ball to all parts of the ground. Copleston, together with O’Gorman, looked dominant and gave the Rowledge bowlers no respite as they continued to smash the ball around the ground. O’Gorman unfortunately fell 8 runs short of what would have been a well deserved century when he was caught on the boundary. Richard Taylor promoted himself up the order after last week’s quick-fire 45 and he hit his first three balls for 4 before running himself out.

Copleston finished on 64 not out, helping Andover to a massive 412-4, a new record Southern Premier League total. The Andover innings included a record 17 sixes and gave the scorers a torrid time as they run out of space in their scorebooks.

However, skipper Taylor refused to let complacency set in as Andover had scored 301-5 only to lose by seven wickets at Hartley Wintney the previous week. But any prospects of an improbable defeat were effectively ended when Taylor (2-52) and Luke Graham (3-80) reduced Rowledge to 39-3. Rowledge didn’t go down without a fight with Ricky Yates (50) digging in and providing the foil for Peter Dickinson to crack a boundary-strewn 144, an innings which contained seven 6s and 14 fours. Dickinson was eventually dismissed at 270-7 by a big turning off-spinner from Jonty Hadfield who was the pick of the bowlers (2-52). After the big-hitter was removed Rowledge subsided to 289 all out and gave Andover a 123 run victory they thoroughly deserved.

The match itself produced an astonishing 701 runs, a record Southern Premier League aggregate by some distance, with 24 sixes hit over the Rowledge recreation ground hedges, and 81 fours crashed into the fence.

A remarkable game and a fantastic win for the town side which gets them back on track for the title chase. Tomorrow Andover host basement boys Havant where Prozesky will be looking to continue his incredible form against his former club.
