Andover Cricket Club 1st XI (Sat) v Havant II on Sat 29 May 2010 at 1:00pm
Andover Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets (reduced target)
Match report
Andover continued to progress up the league table with a convincing 5 wicket victory over Havant. On a wet and windy day at London Road, Richard Taylor lost the toss and was asked to field first. The game was reduced to a 38 over game due to a rain delayed start so Andover knew they had to restrict the opposition batsmen from scoring runs.
They set about this task very well with openers Will Prozesky and James O'Gorman bowling a tight line and length. Prozesky took the first wicket thanks to a superb catch at slip by O'Gorman. The Havant batsmen continued to struggle to get the ball away as leading wicket taker Luke Graham gave them nothing to hit. It was Graham who made the next breakthrough, removing opener Hopson after bowling a well disguised slower ball. With Taylor bowling superbly in tandem with Graham for 15 overs, this effectively restricted the away team to a low total.
Off spinner Jonty Hadfield was brought into the attack to take wickets and he did exactly that when he found the outside edge of Matthews, caught by Cillie Van der Merwe on his return to the club after a winter in South Africa. The stylish wicket keeper was as sharp as ever behind the stumps, making life a misery for the batsmen by standing up to all the bowlers and removing the bails at any glimpse of a chance.
As they entered the final overs, Havant realised they needed quick runs if they were to post a competitive total and they started to hit out. However, this was made difficult by O'Gorman who was near impossible to get away and he was rewarded with a wicket, caught by Hadfield. The Havant innings closed on 125-4 off 38 overs which was about 60 runs short of a competitive total.
Andover's run chase started positively as the in-form Ali Hooper carved the opening bowlers to all parts of the ground in his quick-fire 27 before the downpour of rain which reduced the total to 112 off 33 overs. When Hooper was bowled by a Hornbuckle slower ball, fellow opener Prozesky continued his outstanding form, scoring 300 runs in the last 3 innings, with an equally hard-hitting 45, hitting two huge straight sixes.
O'Gorman again played the supporting role and was unfortunately caught and bowled by the impressive Matthews, trying to force the pace before the heavens opened again. A minor wobble ensued as Prozesky was caught behind, Van der Merwe caught slip and Robbie Hadfield caught at gully, all with only 10 runs required for victory.
However, stone-wall Jonty Hadfield saw the home team over the finish line with 10 overs still remaining. Another fantastic team performance from Andover which sees them leap-frog Rowledge in the league standings and move into second place. Tomorrow they will be looking to move into top spot when they travel to Bournemouth.
