Andover Cricket Club 1st XI (Sat) v Hook & N'ham Basics on Sat 12 Jun 2010 at 1:00pm
Andover Cricket Club Won by 74 runs

Match report Andover’s premier side continued their excellent form with another comprehensive victory over third-placed Hook and Newnham Basics, keeping them in the hunt for top spot in the Southern Premier Division 2. Richard Taylor won the toss yet again and elected to bat first on what was a hard and flat London Road track.

Andover had a stuttering start, losing opener Steve Ott in the second over, but Ali Hooper was at his belligerent best, smashing 41 from 20 balls to put the pressure back on to the Hook bowlers. When Hooper fell in the 8th over, followed by Mark Copleston soon after, New Zealander James O’Gorman came to the crease and steadied the ship with Jonty Hadfield. The pair nudged the ball around for quick singles and blasted the bad ball for four in their 140-run stand. O’Gorman batted superbly and cruised to a chanceless century, his first in the SPL, whilst at the other end, Jonty Hadfield was compiling a tidy 78 not out.

When O’Gorman was eventually dismissed for 101, Hadfield guided the Andover tail to post yet another colossal total. The Andover tail wagged with everyone chipping in with single figure scores to help the home side post a sizeable 277-9 off their 50 overs.

Andover started their bowling innings well with Mike Adams removing danger-man Ben Thane, caught behind by Cillie Van der Merwe, one of four victims for him. Richard Taylor soon followed this up by clean bowling hard-hitting Jordan Hobday to leave Hook struggling at 70-2 off 20 overs.

The Hook batsmen rallied and gave themselves an outside chance at 160-3 with youngsters Neil Marsh (63) and Matt Love (54) playing their shots. However, it was only a matter of time before they succumbed to the pressure of the Andover bowlers and wickets started to tumble. Mike Adams (3-26) and Luke Graham (3-59) did the bulk of the damage, both bowling an immaculate line and length, giving the batsmen nothing to hit.

Excellent fielding, led by Cillie Van der Merwe, restricted the away team to under 5 an over which was never going to enough to win them the game. Jonty Hadfield and James O’Gorman both completed excellent days by taking a wicket apiece and the asking run rate proved too great as Hook, with too much to do, crashed to 203 all out.

This victory kept the town side in second place behind New Milton but they hope to close the gap when they travel to Paultons tomorrow.
