Paultons v Andover Cricket Club 1st XI (Sat) on Sat 19 Jun 2010 at 1:00pm
Andover Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets

Match report Andover increased their winning streak to five in a row with another comprehensive victory over Silver league new-comers Paultons. For the first time this season Richard Taylor lost the toss and was asked to field first on a sunny day at the picturesque ground in the New Forest.

Andover started well with opening pace duo Taylor and Mike Adams finding the edge of both openers and number 3, which were all well caught by Will Prozesky, James O’Gorman and Cillie Van der Merwe. Reeling at 40-3, Paultons needed to rebuild their innings and this came in the form of O’Brian and Ennew who dropped anchor for 15 overs. Both batsmen notched up well constructed half-centuries and when the pair started to attack the Andover bowlers on a flat pitch with a small boundary, a big total looked possible.

However, the introduction of Will Prozesky’s off-spin proved to be the end of O’Brian who found him impossible to get away. Skipper Taylor tinkered with his bowling changes and was rewarded with a wicket when Luke Graham was given a 5 over blast, removing Chris Ray for just 4 runs. The reintroduction of Mike Adams back into the attack sparked two quick wickets for the leading wicket taker who removed big hitters Richmond and Ennew. Adam’s was at his guileful best, bowling an array of slower balls, cutters and big in swinging yorkers and took his tally to 15 wickets so far this season.

Thanks to a lusty last over that yielded 24 runs, the Paultons innings closed on 237-6 which appeared to be a par score for this ground.

The Andover run chase started confidently with openers Ali Hooper and Will Prozesky smashing 100 off the first 10 overs. The big hitting pair crashed the Paultons’ bowlers to all parts of the ground with Hooper’s back foot game complimenting Prozesky’s powerful front foot drives. Hooper was first to be dismissed for 40 off just 23 balls and Prozesky soon followed having amassed 53 in quick-time. This start set the innings up nicely as James O’Gorman (27) and Mark Copleston (19) continued the good work, milking the bowlers for singles and taking advantage of the gaps in the field. O’Gorman was unlucky to be adjudged caught behind when he clipped his pad and not the ball and when Copleston misjudged the length and hit an easy catch to mid-on, Andover started to wobble. The town side lost Cillie Van der Merwe, Luke Andrews and Tim Clarke in the space of 3 overs but Andover were always confident of victory with the ever-reliable stonewall Jonty Hadfield.

Hadfield, who has only been out twice from seven innings this season, was joined by Mike Adams and the pair batted with maturity and confidence as they sensibly used the overs to ease the away side to victory. Adams combined steady defence with imperious stroke-play to compile 33 not out, his highest score of the season, while Hadfield displayed his typical assortment of reverse sweeps and inventive paddle shots to end up on 37 not out. Andover finished their innings 7 wickets down with 3 overs still remaining.

Although they made it difficult for themselves, the final result was never in doubt as Andover’s strength in depth shone through again. Andover still sit second in the league as New Milton also continued their unbeaten run, but the two table-toppers meet each other tomorrow at London Road in a potential league decider.
