Andover Cricket Club 1st XI (Sat) v New Milton on Sat 26 Jun 2010 at 1:00pm
Andover Cricket Club Won by 46 runs

Match report Andover stretched their winning streak to six games undefeated when they toppled the league leaders New Milton at London Road on Saturday. On a glorious day at the town’s home of cricket, Andover skipper Richard Taylor was delighted to win the toss and unsurprisingly elect to bat first on a hard and fast Andover track. It was a must win game for Andover if they are to make a return to the Gold league next season.

The innings started badly for the home side losing the usually reliable Ali Hooper for just 1 run but fellow opener Will Prozesky provided some fireworks when he launched an assault on the highly rated New Milton pace attack. He bludgeoned a rapid 45 before being hit by an aggressive bouncer and suffering a suspected broken rib. Quick wickets soon followed to leave Andover precariously balanced at 70-5 and a recovery was required, which came in the form of the talented Hadfield brothers, Jonty and Chris. The pair batted sublimely; never looking in danger of getting out and playing with style and panache. The prolific Jonty Hadfield was first to complete his half-century, his third SPL fifty of the season. Jonty has been a reliable force at number 5 for Andover this season, amassing 285 runs and, crucially, only being dismissed 3 times in 8 innings. When Jonty was eventually removed, his older brother Chris continued his good work and notched up his fifty. It was an innings of patience and concentration as wickets tumbled around him in the blistering heat.

After a flurry of wickets, he was joined by the tenacious Martin Roberts, back in the side after a stint in the second eleven, and the pair guided Andover towards a competitive total. Hadfield ended unbeaten on 51 while Roberts had compiled a tidy 27 not out, to leave Andover posting 243-8 from their 50 overs.

The defence of the total could not have started better for the town side as they came out of the blocks all guns blazing. Richard Taylor, clearly psyched up by the fact the game was being broadcast live on Radio Solent, ripped the heart out of the New Milton top order that had served them so well thus far in the season. The town skipper, who has led the side to the best start they have had to a season for some time, bowled with pace and control and was well supported by some excellent fielding. The key wicket of David Wheeler came in just the 5th over when Kiwi James O’Gorman plucked a superb catch at slip off Taylor to send the away team’s skipper back to the changing room. Taylor ended with figures of 6-40 from 10 overs, his best of the season so far and hopefully the start of a wicket-filled season for him. Taylor was well supported by the imperious Mike Adams, who was unlucky to have not taken more than just his one wicket for the day.

At 40-6, the away team stood no chance of reaching the total but set about accumulating some bonus batting points. Taylor tinkered with his bowling changes in an attempt to remove the final 4 wickets but they were resolute in defence and Andover had to be patient. Jonty Hadfield was introduced into the attack and ripped out one wicket with his big turning off-spin. The 9th and final wicket fell to pace-man Luke Graham, picking up his 16th wicket of the season as Andover failed to bowl the New Milton side out in their 50 overs, closing on 197-9. An excellent 46 run victory for Andover who were the better team for the majority of the game against a strong New Milton side.

A great team effort from the Andover 1st XI who look to continue their unbeaten run tomorrow when they host strugglers Burridge at London Road (1pm start).
