Andover Cricket Club 2nd XI (Sat) v Ryde on Sat 22 May 2010 at 1:00pm
Andover Cricket Club Won by 1 wicket

Match report The seconds won a thriller at London Road against a strong Ryde side thanks to an innings of the highest quality from Paul Funnell who notched up a career best score of 161 not out.

Much to the consternation of his team mates, skipper, Andy Sale, chose to bowl first on a hot afternoon, but the opening bowlers, Dean Woodhouse and James Knight really got stuck in and bowled an immaculate line and length restricting the Ryde openers to just 24 from the first 10 overs.

Knight was rewarded with a wicket for his efforts at the end of his first spell, and then Jon Walsh and Dave Webb bowled well in partnership picking up a wicket apiece, to maintain the pressure on Ryde, but to their credit, the visitors started to pull things back gradually increasing the run rate. The middle order delivered 200 runs between them and ended on a competitive 254 for 7.

Dean Woodhouse was again the stand out bowler ending with figures of 2 for 41 from his 10 which included a quick trip to casualty to re-set a dislocated finger.

The town side were confident of chasing the total but started badly losing both openers in the first three overs. And at 24 for 3 the run chase was stalling before it started, but Paul Funnell, batting at 3 took the attack to the confident Ryde bowlers, aggressively attacking at any opportunity.

Partnerships of 71 and 54 with Dave Webb and Stewart Clackson were key to the run chase, but Funnell dominated, dispatching the ball to all parts. It was just a question of whether he would run out of partners as wickets fell regularly.

Nerves began to fray as the eighth and ninth wickets fell in quick succession. But James Knight held his nerve crashing a straight drive for 4 to tie the scores, and the game was won in the 47th over with a jubilant Paul Funnell carrying his bat.

The 2s have no game on Saturday but will now be confident of continuing their winning start against Fawley the week after.
