Compton and Chandlers Ford v Andover Cricket Club 2nd XI (Sat) on Sat 17 Jul 2010 at 1:00pm
Andover Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets

Match report Andover IIs suffered another disappointing loss at Compton & Chandlers Ford. With the first team game called off, the seconds were able to draft in Mike Adams and Jonty Hadfield to strengthen a side that was missing many regulars.

The town side were asked to bat first on an ugly looking track, and immediately struggled. Mike Adams was dismissed for just 7 when trying to force the pace on a pitch that played as bably as it looked over the first 30 overs.

Robbie Hadfield and Matt Knight made slow but steady progress in their partnership of 54, but the home side throttled any scoring opportunities through a combination of good line and length bowling and the helpful conditions.

Hadfield was eventually dismissed for 43 in the 27th and was replaced by his brother Jonty who found the conditions no easier than his sibling. At 30 overs with the score on just 80, Knight and Hadfield really needed to push on and Knight accelerated to a hard faught 50. Hadfield resorted to tip and run cricket and with Knight tiring, he was run out going for a 3rd run.

Hadfield was bowled next ball for 29, and a collapse followed as the lower order tried to play catch up with the scoring rate. Dave Webb (19) and Alex Webber (8) dragged the score up to somewhere near respectability, but 188 looked to be at least 50 short of par.

The Andover bowlers could not get as much out of the pitch after tea, and batting conditions eased significantly allowing powerful openers Pradham and Morsello to play extravagently against the pace of Mike Adams and James Knight.

Skipper, Andy Sale, quickly turned to spin at both ends from Jonty Hadfield and Dave Webb and this ploy looked to have paid off when first Pradham smashed a Hadfield half-volley to short extra cover where the catch was sharply taken by the skipper himself and then followeing this up by bowling Haworth cheaply.

With the score on 45 for 2 from 11 overs, the game looked finely poised, with the town side gunning for another couple of quick wickets to take control of the match. But the breakthrough would not come. Webb (0-51) and Hadfield (2-27) completed their spells without taking another wicket and in spite of a good spell from the up and coming James Duckworth, and a fiery blast from James Knight, the 3rd wicket did not fall until the score was on 168 with Jonty Hadfield taking a spectacular catch at slip off the bowling of Knight.

But it was too little too late and Compton & Chandlers Ford cruised to victory in the 43rd over. The twos are away again tomorrow at Portchester and need a strong performance to keep them in the top half of the table.
