Portchester v Andover Cricket Club 2nd XI (Sat) on Sat 24 Jul 2010 at 1:00pm
Andover Cricket Club Lost by 161 runs

Match report The second team's miserable run of form continued at Portchester with a comprehensive 161 run defeat which is dragging the side into a relegation battle in County 1. Early season form has disappeared and has been replaced with sloppy fielding, indifferent bowling and a lack of discipline with the bat.

Portchester made the most of a good toss to win and batted first with style and confidence. With the ball coming onto the bat and a lightning quick outfield, anything loose from the Andover seamers was punished with relish. Under the circumstances, Jon Walsh's opening spell of 0 for 31 from 10 overs was perhaps the performance of an otherwise unremarakable performance with the ball.

A lacklustre fielding display did not help the bowlers. The only positive note in the field came from the veteran Jon Walsh, who pulled off a remarkable catch for one who usually displays the fielding attributes of a gazelle with a lion clamped to its neck.

James Knight (4 for 56) and Gedeon Charles (3 for 99) profited from some late order slogging but the damage had been done by the home side's top three who contributed 229 out of a total of 314 for 8.

In reply, openers Andy Sale and Martin Roberts knew they needed to get the run chase off to a positive start, but the Portchester seam attack was relentless in its accuracy, and with no bad balls to latch onto, the pressure built quickly. Sale went first for just 7, gloving a lifting delivery to the keeper, club stalwart Paul Funnell followed soon after for 0, and Roberts (19) eventually holed out after enduring a barrage of short pitched deliveries.

Robbie Hadfield (20) and Dave Webb (25) steadied the ship for a while, but wickets fell with disappointing regularity. Matt Knight made up for running out the luckless Shaun Attwood with a defiant knock of 49 which included a run a ball partnership of 57 for the 9th wicket with his identical twin James who contributed 16.

The Andover wagged its last on 153 and the team will have to improve significantly in all areas of their game if they are to reverse their fortunes tomorrow against Alton IIs at London Road.
