Andover Cricket Club 2nd XI (Sat) v Alton II on Sat 31 Jul 2010 at 1:00pm
Andover Cricket Club Lost by 14 runs

Match report Andover IIs slipped further into relegation trouble following defeat by 14 runs against Alton IIs at London Road.

Having elected to bowl first on a very dry pitch, openers James Knight (1 for 26) and Jon Walsh (1 for 22)continued their fine partnership with the ball taking a wicket apiece in restricting Alton to 29 for 2 from the first 12 overs.

With no spinner in the side this week, it was important that the town side maintained the pressure, and Gedeon Charles (1 for 32) and Dean Woodhouse (1 for 32) duly obliged, the latter using all his experience to frustrate the visitors with well disguised slower balls and excellent line and length.

But it was the introduction of Andy McMahon that turned the game towards the town side with a great spell of 4 for 20 from his 10 overs. Alton looked well short of a competitive score, but 17 runs plundered off the last over the game by Ed Hubbard who easily top-scored with 81 not out gave Alton a little respectibility setting 175 for 8.

In reply, openers Stuart Summers (34)and Martin Roberts (20)started positively, both dispatching anything loose from the Alton seamers to the boundary with aplomb, but the visitors quickly turned to spin which turned the game emphatically in their favour. Andover collapsed from 50 for 0 from 12 overs to 56 for 4 just three overs later.

Skipper, Andy Sale and Matt Knight dropped anchor in the face of the spin onslaught as the dry track saw the ball turning extravagently. At 87 for 4 from 34 overs, the pair had seen off the best of the Alton spinners, and they hit the accelerator. Sale fell for 16 hard fought runs when the score was on 106, Gedeon Charles hit a quick-fire 17, and Matt Knight went on to score 43, unfortunately running himself out 3 overs from the end with Andover still needing 20 runs for victory.

The town side were bowled out for 161 in the last over, and will need to notch up a couple of wins in the last 4 weeks of the season to be safe, starting at Locks Heath tomorrow.
