Andover Cricket Club Won

Match report Andover 1st XI v Andover 2nd XI
Andover continued their pre-season fixtures with an inter-club match that combined the first and second elevens competing against each other in a 50 over match with a twist. The top six batsmen for each side batted in pairs and each pair had 12 overs to bat. If a person was dismissed before getting to 50 runs then 15 runs was taken off the team score but they could continue to bat. After the top six had batted, normal cricket rules applied. The two captains were 1st XI skipper Richard Taylor and 2nd XI vice-captain Luke Andrews, in the absence of regular 2nd XI captain Andy Sale. Richard Taylor’s XI lost the toss and were asked to field first on a hot and sunny day at London Road.
Opening pair Ali Hooper and Steve Ott got off to a blistering start with the belligerent Hooper hitting a 20 ball 50 in the first five overs. Hooper was at his destructive best, hitting anything with any width for 4 and playing shots all round the ground. He was ably supported by Ott, making his London Road debut, who crafted 25 runs and the pair had posted an impressive 85 from their 12 overs, with only Hooper being dismissed once, caught at slip by Phil Knight off the bowling of Mike Adams. Adams and his opening bowling partner James Knight both improved their line and length as the innings progressed and were rewarded with wickets.
James O’Gorman and Mark Copleston came in at numbers 3 and 4 and continued the good work with both playing sensible innings and timing the ball nicely. However, excellent bowling from Richard Taylor and Luke Graham tied down the batsmen and as a result picked up 3 wickets for the pair, knocking off 45 runs in the process. The duo bowled an outstanding line and length and they will be a force to be reckoned with when the league season begins.
Jonty Hadfield and Luke Andrews were the final “pair” to bat and once again, they looked in fine form. Hadfield in particular showed a superb array of shots, demonstrating what an asset he will be in the middle of the order this season. He amassed 35 runs although he was dismissed once off the spin bowling of David Webb. Andrews struggled early on with the pace of Richard Taylor but once he got his eye in, showed his true potential. The pair set up the remainder of the innings nicely with a score of 50 from their 12 overs.
The tail of the first innings wagged significantly as Matt Knight showed his ever-improving potential with a fine knock, driving the ball to all parts of the ground. Dean Woodhouse, Harry Blackburn and Gedeon Charles showed their worth at the end of the innings, each contributing with a double figures score and helped to post 209 from 50 overs. When you take into consideration the runs deducted for wickets lost, this was quite a total for the side batting second to chase down.
Shaun Attwood and Robbie Hadfield got off to a disastrous start by losing two early wickets but they steadily rebuilt the innings with Hadfield looking especially confident, taking a liking to Gedeon Charles’ pace bowling. He played with maturity beyond his years and was not fazed by the pressure that was placed on him and as a consequence, has earned himself a place in the 1st XI tomorrow. The run chase continued with Luke Graham and Mike Adams, who looked to be the side’s best batting pair. The two had a good understanding and kept the fielders on their toes with a combination of hard hitting and quick singles. They managed to increase the score to 40 from 20 overs, rebuilding the innings after the early damage.
Jeremy Blackburn and Jack Andrews came in at 5 and 6 and struggled early on with the unwavering line and length of James O’Gorman who picked up 3 wickets in his spell. Jonty Hadfield bowled well in tandem with O’Gorman and between them they managed to tie down the pair and take wickets with regularity, which left the batting side an insurmountable task of scoring 140 in just 14 overs with only 4 wickets in hand.
However, the batting side made an excellent attempt of it with new signing Will Prozesky launching an assault on the bowling attack, smashing the ball to the boundary nearly every ball. He notched up his fifty after a mere 18 balls before being caught on the rope off the bowling of John Walsh. Prozesky will undoubtedly be a huge asset to the club with his experience, enthusiasm and talent.
The batting side’s tail tried their best to get close to the total with Taylor, James and Phil Knight all playing their shots, but ended up 60 runs short of their target.
This game was played in a very competitive but friendly spirit and was a worthwhile experience for all concerned. It gave the captains a chance to see new or in-form players and help build some team spirit before the league season starts next week. There were a lot of promising performances, especially from younger members in the club, which bodes well for Andover this season.
Andover 1st XI travel to Burridge tomorrow in the opening game of the Southern Electric Silver League. Burridge finished third in the league last year and will prove a tough test for the town side.
