Match report Andover Sunday 1sts entertained Thatcham in the Border League game on Sunday. Stand in skipper Phil Knight lost the toss but was pleased to be asked to bat first. Despite the early loss of Matt Knight for 6, Harry Blackburn 33 built steadily on his innings of 70 the previous day and together with the attacking James O'Gorman 37 moved the score on nicely before O'Gorman tried one big shot too many and was bowled. Cillie Van Der Merwe found batting tricky to start with but after a few overs the boundaries started coming and he stroked a majestic 57 including 3 6's. He was well supported by Alex Aldridge 34 who hit some lovely drives in his innings. The tail waggged tamely but a few late blows from Ali Hooper 16 and Ryan Ward 11 took the score to a creditable 240.

In reply the Thatcham openers began steadily against the bowling of father and son team of Phil and James Knight. James Knight was particularly unlucky to have J Winfield 62 dropped twice in the same over by his wicketkeeping brother Matt. The return of the mercurial spin of Ali Hooper and Ben Knight failed to take the much needed wicket and Thatcham were cruising at 139 for 0 in the 29th over when Ryan Ward came to the rescue. His first ball was a full toss whioh J Winfield looped to Midwicket and James O'Gorman took a fine running catch. The pace of Cillie Van Der Merwe was employed from the other end and he secured the wicket of the other opener Watts 59 from a quick yorker which destroyed his off stump. Ryan Ward then started to make inroads securing another wicket from a full toss caught at midwicket and a sharp run out by O'Gorman led to dramatic collapse in the Thatcham batting. From 185 for 3, Ryan Ward 6 -33 and James O'Gorman 2-20 then ripped through the middle and late order with some accuarte bowling to leave Thatcham all out for 207. It was Ryan Ward's career best bowling and showed his growing potential.

This Sunday Andover take on Hook and Newnham Basics in the Southern Electric 20/20 semi final at London Road. The prize for the winners is a final at the Hampshire Rose Bowl under the floodlights. There will be a great atmosphere at the game with music, barbecue and bar . The game starts at 3pm and spectators are encouraged to support the town side through to the final. Entrance is free.
