Sparsholt v Andover Cricket Club 1st XI (Sun) on Sun 15 Aug 2010 at 2:00pm
Andover Cricket Club Won by 98 runs
Match report
After finding the elusive keys that allowed entry to the clubhouse Andover began their friendly fixture against Sparsholt. Captain Jonty Hadfield was eagerly informed of the uneven bounce and lateral movement that was expected at the beautiful Sparsholt ground. Despite the warning he decided to place trust in his troops and bat first.
Matt Knight and the confident Will Turner entered the fray and immediately put Andover on the front foot. Matt Knight punished some loose bowling before being dismissed for 13 in quick time. On the other hand, Turner had clearly not taken on board the classy strokeplay he witnessed at the previous day's T20 final at the Rose Bowl as he spluttered through his innings. Unfortunatley once he got going he was bowled by a vicious inswinger from the impressive Brook for 35 off 73 balls. Robbie Hadfield (35) and Harry Blackburn (24) continued to attack but were both dismissed going for one too many. It left the experienced and talented duo James O'Gorman (30) and Jonty Hadfield to rotate the stike against the spinners despite the ball turning square. They managed this with class and determination leading to the opposition skipper commenting that this passage of the game had 'taken the wind out of our sails. Andover's innings ended with some lusty blows from James Knight (26) and the improving Ryan Ward (16*) on 222-9 from their forty overs.
This target was always going to be a mountain to climb rather in the guise of Kilamanjaro. A partnership between D Foy (37) and J Vokes (32) allowed Sparsholt to reach base camp momentarily before the spin of Jonty Hadfield (4-17) accounted for both in quick time. His bowling partnership with Phil Knight (1-24) meant that Sparsholt could not handle the steep incline of the run rate. Ryan Wards's impressive death bowling and Jos Clarke's concoction of deliveries accounted for the tail with Sparsholt never getting close to the summit, closing on 124 all out.
Special mention must go to Will Turner who has had two fabulous weeks in the field. He has put in a lot of hard work this year especially with his catching and this work was vindicated. If this approach was followed by other members of the team then the fielding unit would be exceptional.
