Andover Cricket Club 1st XI (Sat) v Bournemouth on Sat 30 Apr 2011 at 1:00pm
Andover Cricket Club Lost 2 wkts

Match report Powells-sponsored Andover 1st XI lost on the penultimate ball against last season’s premier champions Bournemouth in a fantastic game of cricket at London Road on Saturday. On another glorious sunny day at Andover’s home of cricket, stand-in skipper Jonty Hadfield lost the toss and was surprisingly asked to bat first on a hard and flat Andover track.

Andover started in typical fashion with Ali Hooper (27) crashing 16 off the first over bowled by last season’s league leading wicket-taker Matt Metcalfe. Unfortunately, the usually reliable run-machine Will Prozesky fell early and was soon followed by Hooper and it was left to Hadfield and Mark Copleston to steady the ship. The pair batted with maturity, with the in-form Copleston punishing any loose bowling and Hadfield rotating the strike sensibly. When Copleston fell for 35 it brought Cil Van der Merwe to the crease for the first time this season and he instantly looked comfortable. The South African stylishly caressed the ball around the ground to notch up a fifty and he was well supported by the dependable Hadfield. When Hadfield brought his well-deserved fifty up in the 35th over, Andover looked well placed to go on to post a huge score. However, Van der Merwe (50) and Hadfield (59) fell on consecutive deliveries and it was left to the powerful tail to take the game on.

Teenager Robbie Hadfield (37) and Luke Andrews (18) blazed the ball to all parts of the ground with Hadfield’s innovative stroke-play complimenting Andrews’ powerful hitting. The tail continued to contribute with Luke Graham blasting 14 and Andover were bowled out for 258 in the final over. An excellent score and one that gave them a great chance of victory.

The defence of the big total started well with opener Mike Adams snaring the wicket of Evans thanks to a superb diving catch from Andrews at point. Andover had to dig deep as Bournemouth then started to build a big partnership with James Park looking particularly threatening. When Luke Graham ripped out House’s off stump, the game started to swing back into Andover’s favour. Spin duo, Jonty Hadfield and Will Prozesky tied down the Bournemouth batsmen and they found the required run-rate creeping up towards 9 an over with 10 overs left. Hadfield, the pick of the Andover bowlers, was rewarded with three wickets for his consistent length and big turn and he deserved to be on the winning side with his all-round performance.

The Bournemouth batsmen started to cut loose in the final ten overs but wickets started to fall. However, the ever-present Park was still at the crease and having cruised to a century with no sign of slowing down, Andover knew they had their work cut out. Adams and Sajesh Josesh both picked up a wicket apiece at the death as the game swung backwards and forwards to Andover’s favour and it was Josesh who bowled the last over with just 4 runs required for victory. Two dot balls followed by a single and a two meant that the scores were tied with two balls remaining. With the field up saving the single, the impressive Park struck a 4 on the penultimate ball that sealed the victory for the away team. Park ended on 161 not out and single-handedly won the game for his side. It was a devastating blow after an excellent all round team performance from the town side but plenty of positives can be taken from the newly promoted side as they travel to league title favourites St Cross next Saturday, 1:00pm start.
