St Cross Symondians v Andover Cricket Club 1st XI (Sat) on Sat 07 May 2011 at 1:00pm
Andover Cricket Club Lost by 3 wickets

Match report Andover lost their second consecutive Southern Premier League game in another close encounter when they travelled to title contenders St Cross Symondians. After a heavy night of rain, the pitch was inevitably wet and the toss was potentially very important. Unfortunately stand-in captain Jonty Hadfield lost the toss and was unsurprisingly asked to bat first. Andover openers Ali Hooper and Will Prozesky found it tough going against the opening pace duo of West Indian international Lionel Baker and home-grown Tim Lewis on a seamer friendly wicket. Hooper was first to be dismissed and was soon followed by Tim Saye and James O’Gorman.

Jonty Hadfield then played a superb supporting role to the powerful Prozesky who blasted his way to 75, including 2 huge sixes. When Prozesky was caught in the deep of Perry-Lewis, Andover needed to rebuild their innings. However, Hadfield found little support from the tail as nearly all came and went without troubling the scorers too much and the skipper finished unbeaten on 28 with Andover being bowled out for just 165; a score that was arguably 20 runs short of being competitive.

The St Cross run chase started positively and with the in-form pair Adair (33) and Esson (32) looking strong, the Winchester based side looked like they would cruise to victory. However, the introduction of gangly fast bowler Luke Graham sparked an Andover revival. The lanky seamer ripped out 5 of the top 6 batsmen in a devastating 10 over spell, including the prize scalps of former Hampshire player Lawrence Prittipaul and Australian Ryan Hale. He was ably supported by some superb fielding led by wicket-keeper Cil Van der Merwe who was at his imposing best behind the stumps, snaring a catch and a stumping off Graham.

At the other end, Kiwi star James O’Gorman was doing his best to swing the game Andover’s way as he picked up two wickets, including a breath-taking caught and bowled. The home side found themselves wobbling with 7 wickets down and just 20 runs required for victory. Hadfield brought himself back on to bowl in one last hope to prize out the final 3 wickets but St Cross held their nerve and the West Indian Baker used his experience to sensibly guide the home team past the finish line, winning by 3 wickets.

An entertaining game of cricket once again for the town side but the good performances need to be converted into results if they are to compete in the league. Andover host Lymington in a crunch game at London Road this Saturday, 1:00pm start. The New Forest side have been well beaten in the first two games of the season and will be up against a full strength Andover side as Richard Taylor and Mark Copleston return.
