Purley v Andover Cricket Club 1st XI (Sun) on Sun 31 Jul 2011 at 2:00pm
Andover Cricket Club Lost by 30 runs

Match report Andover Sunday firsts travelled to table toppers Purley without inspirational leader Richard Woodley knowing that a victory was needed.

Stand in skipper Ben Knight did the honourable thing and lost the toss as Andover found themselves in the field. Opening bowlers Dan Turner and Hamish Morton hit their lines and lengths from the beginning with Turner (3-28)removing both openers in quick succession. Knight then threw the ball to the experinced duo of Jonty Hadfield (1-20)and Matt Goodman (3-51)and Purley soon found themselves 90-6. Only some expert shot selection and pure timing was what prevented Andover from hammering home the advantage. Despite skipper Knight's 3-46 with his deceptive flight and guile, Purley boosted themsleves up to a competitive 197.

After an impressive tea break, Andover took to the field feeling confident. Robbie Hadfield (24) set the early pace which some expansive drives and sweeps, before he played at one too many and was caught by a brilliant one handed reaction catch. After a minor collapse, J.Hadfield (30)set about rebuilding the innings, sharing useful partnerships with Brown and Goodman, but Hadfield was soon out LBW which left Andover in trouble. Skipper Knight was bowled after the Purley spinner threw up a ball that he would normally capitalise upon and hit to the boundary; however this time he was decieved and was bowled. This left Andover reeling at 100-8 when Harri Williams joined Turner at the crease. The pair set about getting a respectble score, Turner (50) chanced his arm and brought up his first fifty while Williams showed maturity beyond his years to end on 12*, but Andover were bowled out for 167 falling 30 runs short.

Next week an improved batting performance will be required as normal service will be resumed with Woodley back at the helm
