Andover Cricket Club 1st XI (Sat) v Thatcham on Sat 16 Apr 2011 at 1:00pm
Andover Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets

Match report Powells sponsored Andover 1st XI started their 2011 season in some style with a 3 wicket victory over Thames Valley League side Thatcham in their first pre-season friendly on a sunny day at London Road.

Skipper Richard Taylor lost the toss and was asked to field first on good batting pitch. Opening pace-man Mike Adams made the first inroads, removing the off stump of former Andover batsman, and Thatcham captain, Dan Williams in the 5th over. Fellow opening bowler, and new signing for Andover, Sajesh Joseph, bowled a brisk spell on his debut for the town club and was unlucky not to be rewarded with a wicket. The Indian-born speedster will be a handful for the Southern Premier League batsman this season.

After Adams initial breakthrough, wickets fell with regularity with Luke Graham claiming 3 victims in a lively spell but the run rate was concerning as the Thatcham batsmen started to take the game to the Andover attack. Another former Andover player, Jason Williams, cracked a quick-fire 53 and was supported by Jenkins (76) at the other end and while they occupied the crease a big score loomed. However, the introduction of off-spinner Will Prozesky sparked a dramatic collapse as he snared 3 wickets in 2 overs to end the Thatcham innings on 207 all out. A positive fielding display from the home side, led by the dynamic Jonty Hadfield who set a high standard in the field, dominating the cover-point area.

The Andover run chase started badly with the early dismissals of Prozesky and Mark Copleston but opener Ali Hooper and Andy Sale (16) briefly rebuilt the innings until Sale was trapped LBW, one of 4 victims for seamer Jack Andrews. The usually dependable Jonty Hadfield came and went cheaply and it was left to his younger brother, Robbie, to steady the ship for Andover. Hooper was in a typically bullish mood as he blazed the ball to all parts and he was ably supported by Hadfield who fell for a well- crafted 29.

At the half-way stage, Andover were well poised on 116-4 but they needed Hooper to continue if they were to stand a chance of chasing down the total. Hooper duly obliged and progressed to a fine century from just 76 balls as he shared partnerships with Joseph, Roberts and the hard-hitting Luke Graham, the latter blasting a 8 ball 16 not out to hit the winning runs in the 34th over. Hooper finished unbeaten on chanceless 123 in a classy innings from the pint-sized powerhouse.

A great start to the season for the town side with contributions coming from everyone in the side and they look to continue their winning record at home to Sparsholt in another pre-season friendly on Saturday, 1:00pm start.
