Alton v Andover Cricket Club 1st XI (Sat) on Sat 17 Jun 2017 at 11.30am
Andover Cricket Club Lost lost by 125 runs

Match report Nordlock sponsored Andover 1st team travelled to Alton in a clash of the two bottom teams in the Southern Premier League. Skipper Matt Hooper lost his seventh consecutive toss of the season and Andover were asked to bowl on a scorching hot day.

Babu Veettil and Mike Adams too the new ball for Andover and the pair immediately caused problems for the Alton opening batsmen. Veettil bowled well and struck the first blow for Andover, removing opener Hammond to a smart catch from wicketkeeper Dave Watson. The pair continued to bowl smartly and together constricted the Alton run scoring to leave them at 30 for 1 after 10 overs. Skipper Matt Hooper introduced himself into at the attack along with Andover's overseas star Chamika Karunaratne. Matt Hooper varied his pace skilfully on the dry Alton surface and he was rewarded with two wickets leaving Alton reeling at 50 for 3. Karunaratne then improved matters further for Andover, clean bowling the new Alton batsmen with a pacy delivery, leaving Andover well in control at 60 for 4. Having watched 3 wickets fall at the end, Alton captain Scott Myers started to counter attack with his new partner Heffernan. The pair batted resolutely to see off a fiery spell from Karunaratne and then set about dragging Alton back into the game. They managed to bat until the lunch break leaving Alton at 130 for 4 off 34 overs.

Captain Matt Hooper fired his team up with some inspirational words over their lasagne and Babu Veettil responded removing Heffernan (30) immediately after the lunch break to another catch for keeper Dave Watson. New ball partner Mike Adams struck at the other end to leave Alton at 150 for 6 and the game finely poised. However Myers (102) remained a thorn in Andover's side and he continued to be the focal point of Alton's resistance. He negotiated another fiery spell from Karunaratne and in conjunction with some late order hitting from Jamison (23) took Alton up to an imposing 248 for 7 off their 64 overs.

Andover were clearly feeling the effect of their extended fielding spell in the hot weather as they lost quick wickets at the start of their chase. Alton overseas star Jamison was the main destroyer and reduced Andover to 30 for 5 at the tea break with fiery spell of fast bowling.
Matt Knight and Max Souter resumed after the tea break and showed good discipline as they attempted to salvage a draw. However just as the pair bagan to find their feet Soutar was bowled for 8 leaving Andover firmly in the mire at 50 for 6 with more than 40 overs to survive to salvage Andover a draw. Max Romer-Lee, playing his first game on his return from university joined Knight at the crease and the pair tried to salvage something for Andover. Together the pair saw off the Alton new bowlers and Romer-Lee set about attacking the more benign Alton spin attack. The pair put on a partnership of 70 for the 8th wicket, before Romer-Lee holed out for a well made 42. Disaster struck as Knight was removed two balls later for 33 and the rest of the Andover batting line up duly succumbed consigning Andover to defeat.

Andover look to get their season back on track as they welcome high flying Bashley to London Road next weekend.
