New Milton v Andover Cricket Club 1st XI (Sat) on Sat 01 Jul 2017 at 11.00am
Andover Cricket Club Won by 72 runs

Match report Nordlock sponsored Andover made the long journey south to to the New Forest to take on New Milton in the latest round of the Southern Premier League. Skipper Matt Hooper was back at the helm of the town side and new signing Stuart Tognarelli made his debut. Hooper won the toss and elected to bat first on a surface that was notoriously favourable to spin.

Opener Will Arnold got the Andover innings off to a flying start hitting a colossal six and four in the first over. However Arnold (10) was bowled by quick yorker from New Milton opening bowler Loader and was swiftly followed by Treagus and debutant Tognarelli and Andover were reeling at 15 for 3. Opener Storm Green remained at the crease and was joined by overseas star Chamika Karunaratne and the pair set about rebuilding the Andover innings. The pair showed resolute defence and punished the rare bad ball to eek Andover's total up to 40 for 3 at the first drinks break.

Their hard graft continued after the drinks break as New Milton turned to their spin attack. Green and Karunaratne took this opportunity to try to increase the scoring rate slightly through running quick singles and punishing any lose ball. Together they continued to build a partnership and took Andover to 100 for 3 off 30 overs. Just before the lunch break New Milton turned to medium pacer Lee Beck and the move paid immediate dividends removing Karunaratne for a well made 50 and new batsmen Matt Knight without scoring. Dave Watson joined Green and together the Army duo took the score to 110 for 5 at lunch.

After the lunch interval Green and Watson looked to counter attack and take the game to New Milton, Green took the initiative launching a massive six over long followed by boundary to bring up an invaluable 50. The pair continued to attack taking Andover's score to 140 before disaster struck and they removed in successive balls to the spin of R Beck. Andover's tailenders managed to add some crucial runs, with Mike Adams leading the charge with 19. The town side posted 173 which looked to be a competitive total on an increasingly deteriorating pitch.

New Milton's chase got off to the worse start possible when their overseas star Wakefield edged a fiery Karunaratne delivery into the safe hands of Keeper Watson. Karunaratne, ably supported by fellow opener Mike Adams, bowled a fiery spell on a slow surface and had both New Milton batsmen, Arnold and Shrubsole riding their luck. However the batsmen took advantage of this fortune to nudge New Milton up to 50 for 1. Skipper and spinner Matt Hooper could hold himself back no longer and introduced himself into the attack. The move reaped instant rewards bowling New Milton opener Arnold without the batsmen playing a stroke. This proved to be the last ball before the tea break and the game was finely poised with New Milton on 50 for 2.

Hooper struck immediately after the break removing Shrubsole LBW. Having seen the sharp turn in the surface he introduced spin twin Danny Foy into the attack. Foy immediatley joined the party removing new batsmen Hussey and Haggaty thanks to good catching from the town side. New Milton were reeling at 75 for 5. Sensing a chance to finish New Milton off, Hooper threw the ball to Karunaratne and the Sri Lankan star struck a double blow removing Beck and Hussey and effectively ending any chance of New Milton winning the game. Danny Foy did the rest removing the last three New Milton batsmen, bowling the forest side out for 101. Foy finished with personal best of figures of 5-24 in a fine display of leg spin bowling.

A crucial win for Andover as they look to move themselves off the basement in the Southern Premier League. Tomorrow the town side travel to Winchester to face St. Cross.
