St Cross Symondians v Andover Cricket Club 1st XI (Sat) on Sat 08 Jul 2017 at 11.00am
Andover Cricket Club Lost by 106 runs

Match report Nordlock sponsored Andover made the short journey south to Winchester to take on St Cross in the Southern Premier League. Andover included homegrown youngsters Aidan Jansen and Max Romar-Lee in their line up and faced a strong St Cross side including Dutch international star Logan Van Beek and Hampshire pro Asher Hart.

Skipper Matt Hooper lost the toss and was asked to bowl first on a pitch with a slight green tinge. Opening bowlers Mike Adams and Aidan Jansen took the new ball as Andover looked to make early inroads. Adams duly delivered, having St Cross skipper Foyle well caught by Will Arnold in the gully without scoring. Adams then went one better, removing Van Beek for a duck and Andover were in the ascendancy at 4 for 2. Adams and Jansen continued to bowl with great discipline as St Cross attempted to rebuild through Stokes and Came. Andover then suffered a blow as overseas star Chamika Karunaratne pulled up injured after only bowling 2 overs. St Cross capitalised on this misfortune to take the score up to 40 for 2 at 17 overs. Matt Hooper introduced himself and fellow spin twin Danny Foy into the attack. Foy struck soon after having Stokes (30) caught behind by stand in keeper Matt Knight. Hampshire star Hart joined Came at the crease and the pair looked to accelerate the scoring. The pair moved the score up to 100 with some lusty blows before Foy struck to bowl the dangerous looking Came (39). The next over Hooper removed Hart (20) with sharply spinning delivery and had St Cross 100 for 5 off 24 overs.

Ex-Andover star Robbie Hadfield and new batsmen Mead looked to try and push St Cross onto a competitive total. The batted sensibly and punished any loose ball as they pushed St Cross up to 150. Hooper threw the ball to opening bowler Jansen for the last over before lunch and he struck removing Mead for a well made 33.

After lunch Mike Adams struck immediately to trap Hadfield LBW for 33. At 175 for 7 Andover were looking to bowl St Cross out cheaply. However incoming batsmen Jack Bransgrove had other ideas and launched a vicious counter attack. The number 9 launched some massive sixes off spinners Foy and Hooper and put Andover on the back foot. Ably supported by Foyle (20) and Ayres (27*), Bransgrove hit 60 to take St Cross up to a strong looking score of 275 off their 64 overs.

Andover's response started in cavalier fashion with Will Arnold hitting Hart for 3 consecutive boundaries in his first over. However Treagus was adjudged LBW to overseas star Van Beek and put Andover on the back foot. Romar-Lee joined Arnold and the pair set about rebuilding. Together they took the score to 50 off 17 overs at the first drinks break. However disaster struck after the break as Van Beek removed Arnold (26) with a fast inswinging yorker. Romar-Lee (21) followed soon after, bowled by leg spinner Ayres.

Overseas star Karunaratne and Stuart Tognarelli set about rebuilding the Andover innings. The pair batted sensibly, punishing any loose delivery. However Andover soon lost Karunaratne (13), to a sharp catch and from here the innings started to unravel. Knight (18) and Tognarelli (22) attempted to keep the momentum going, but after their dismissal Andover fell to 168 all out, succuumbing to defeat.

Andover welcome South Wilts to London Road next week with the match marking the annual ladies day fixture involving afternoon tea, music and a BBQ.
