Andover Cricket Club 1st XI (Sat) v Burridge on Sat 18 Apr 2015 at 13.00
Andover Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets

Match report Andover 1st XI embarked on their 2015 campaign on a sad note as the club mourned the loss of lifelong member, Pete Aldridge. A big crowd gathered as a minute’s silence was held before the start of the game against Burridge on a sunny day at London Road.
The Andover side performed in a manner that would have made Pete proud as they defeated the Premier league opponents by seven wickets in a pre-season friendly. The town side were sporting four new signings in the form of opening bowler Darron Augustus and his brother Dylan, former Hampshire Academy star Will Arnold and the return of the mercurial Matt Hooper after a five year stint in Plymouth.
After losing the toss, Mike Adams’ side were inserted into the field and were soon amongst the wickets as the pacey duo of Adams and Augustus threatened from the start. First blood fell to Augustus with a pearly away swinger that clipped the top of off stump. The South African born swing bowler will be a handful for Premier batsmen with his pace and variety. Adams then followed suit and trapped the Burridge opener lbw with an in-swinger that the batsman couldn’t lay a bat on. A sharp run-out from club coach David Taylor saw the end of away team captain Rick Ankers as he attempted a risky second run and then the coach came on to remove the dangerous Chowdury with a smart catch down legside from stand-in wicket-keeper Ali Hooper. The middle order were then exposed to the trio of Andover spinners; Matt Hooper, Glyn Treagus and Danny Foy.
Off spinner Hooper bowled a tidy short spell before having to replace his twin brother Ali behind the stumps after he dislocated a finger from a sharp turning Treagus delivery. Leg spinner Foy was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets including the main Burridge threat, Jamie Richards. A return of the seamers saw another wicket fall to Darron Augustus and his brother, not to be out-done by his older sibling, snared one for himself. A late blast from the batting side’s tail saw the visitors reach a respectable 202 for 9 off their allotted 45 overs.
Without regular opener Ali Hooper, Max Souter and Darron Augustus opened up and started the run-chase positively despite some tight bowling from the experienced Burridge attack. Augustus was first to fall, failing to pick a Hewitt slower ball. This made was for new youngster Will Arnold who was out to impress on his first time at the crease for the town side. After some lusty blows from Souter, he was unlucky to get caught to one that stuck in the pitch. Treagus replaced Souter and the experienced head partnered Arnold for a huge third wicket partnership.
The young gun showed class and maturity beyond his years, picking the gaps and running well between the wicket, while punishing the bad ball for four. Treagus played the perfect supporting act as he too rotated the strike with ease, demonstrating why he has scored some many runs at in his long premier league career. With Treagus falling just before the finishing line, it was up to Taylor to hit the winning runs with Arnold carrying his bat for a superlative 93 not out. Andover passed the Burridge total with four overs to spare and seven wickets in hand.
A great start to the 150th year for Andover Cricket Club, with all players getting a good run-out and the new signings bedding in well. Next Saturday is an inter-club match before the league starts the following weekend away at Liphook and Ripsley.
