Ryde v Andover Cricket Club 2nd XI (Sat) on Sat 19 May 2018 at 13:00
Andover Cricket Club Lost by 3 wicket

Match report Andover 2nd XI made the long journey over to the Isle of Wight last Saturday as they took on Ryde in the HCL Division One fixture. After a washout last week and a tense one wicket loss in the first game of the year, they were keen to get their win first win of the year.

On a roasting summers day, skipper James Knight won the toss and elected to bat first on a belting pitch. Experienced duo Andy Sale and Richie Taylor opened the batting for Andover and gave the side a great start. They punished the loose deliveries and ran quickly between the wickets to catapult Andover to 70 for 0 off 12 overs. Taylor was unfortunate to fall in the 13th over for 38. He hammered a wide half volley to into the offside only for the fielder at short cover to take an incredible, one-handed diving catch at short cover. The town side then lost a flurry of disappointing wickets to bring Ryde back into the game. It was the belligerent Andy Sale who soldiered on, despite breaking his toe, supported by youngster Olly Cox. The two batted superbly, keeping the scorecard ticking over and batting with apparent ease on the hard surface. By the time Cox fell for a magnificent 48, Andover were up to 205 in the 45th over and the lower order had the platform to accelerate towards the end of the innings. Some nice contributions from Brandon Smith and Angus McMahon saw the town side up to 236 off their 50 overs, but it was the consummate performance of Andy Sale that stood out he eventually fell in the last over for 101, a superb knock the gave the Town side a chance at the tea interval.

Given the heat and the favourable batting conditions, the Town side knew they were going to have to work hard to get the win. Their fielding innings started slowly with the bowling somewhat wayward and Ryde looking comfortable. Olly Cox was the outstanding bowler on the day and he made the first breakthrough with the score on 45. Ryde continued to bat comfortably, taking the score up to 149 for 1 at the halfway stage. Andover however fought back, with Vanandel (1 - 37) and Kelum Watta (2 - 28) both striking to put Ryde under pressure. Cox (2 -49) and Knight (1 - 37)then returned and took wickets to leave Ryde at193 for 6 with 10 0vers remaining. However, Matthew Webb, batting at 9 for Ryde, produced a masterful knock of 33 not out to take Ryde to a 3 wicket victory.

A tight loss for the Andover, but they can take heart from the fight that they showed throughout. They host OTs & Romsey 2nd XI next week.
