Andover Cricket Club 2nd XI (Sat) v Easton & Martyr W I on Sat 23 Jun 2018 at 13:00
Andover Cricket Club Won By 1 wicket

Match report On a hot June day the seconds returned to London Road to face Easton and Martyr Worthy looking to get that elusive first win of the season.

Captain James Knight lost a crucial toss and were put in to field first. The opening bowlers of Knight (1-33) and Veettil (3-27)bowled tight lines and gave the Easton opening batsman few loose balls. Veettil struck twice in quick succession to leave Easton at 26-2. First change bowlers of Vanandel (1-17) and Taylor (2-39) continued the hard work, restricting the scoring options on the Easton batsmen and picking up the rewards as Vanandel removed Easton’s star overseas player Stannard with a short ball that stuck in the pitch. Some dropped catches in the middle overs let the Easton batsman get away somewhat, but 2 wickets from Souter in an excellent spell along with a tidy run out meant that Easton lost wickets at regular intervals. Eventually they were bowled out for 197 off 45 overs, a long way below par in seemingly ideal batting conditions..

The Andover innings got off to a flying start thanks to Veettil smashing 35 mainly in boundaries however both him and Sale were removed shortly after each other, leaving Andover 67-2 off 10. They set about rebuilding as Liney (16) and Harri Williams dug in briefly before Liney skied one. Blackburn and Souter both came and went while Williams continued, punishing the bad ball and knocking singles around the field . Andover slowly crept towards their total with Williams superbly supported by Brandon Smith and then Robbie Taylor (10). In a tense final twist, however, Williams was caught for a magnificent 82, with only 24 needed and 3 wickets left.

Skipper James Knight (10*) came to the crease and knocked singles with his partner Taylor to edge the Town side to within 20 runs of victory. When Taylor fell LBW, however, the pendulum swung back towards Easton. Knight then launched a huge 6 over the bowlers head and Vanandel stroked a pair of gorgeous boundaries leaving Andover 4 runs to win. A further twist saw Vanandel caught on the boundary, trying to win it with a huge shot over deep mid-wicket. Andover needed 4 to win with last man Tom Morton at the crease. He batted sensibly letting a few wide ones go, before slapping a wide one through the covers for 4 giving Andover a huge first win of the season by 1 wicket.

A monumental effort by the home side who will look to keep the momentum up next week with a trip to Hook & Newham Basics.
